First things first, this year appears to be loaded with great teams from top to bottom. I know the committee had trouble putting this list together. My biggest surprise has to be Iowa at #5. Many of you may be unfamiliar with the Iowa basketball program, but that’s why I’m here. They have an absolute beast on their team by the name of Luka Garza. He was the Big Ten Player of the Year last season so that definitely played a role in them being rated this high. He’s hands down the best big in the country. They also have Joe Wieskamp, who was voted onto the preseason all Big Ten team with Garza. They are both two, very good players, but they finished last season 20-11 and the way that the Big Ten is looking with seven teams in the Top 25 there is no way they last. Not because they won’t be good, but because the Big Ten is just too tough.
My next big surprise is the placement of UNC. Many of you know last season I picked UNC to win the ACC and I was very wrong. I may have a slight UNC bias, but I think 16 is a bit low for them even coming off of a down year. Here is why. Last year was a bit of a fluke. Their go-to guy Cole Anthony was hurt along with a ton of other injuries throughout the season. The only departures are the aforementioned Anthony, Brandon Robinson and two grad transfers who were beyond overmatched in the ACC. They return Garrison Brooks who averaged 16.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2 assists. He should be the favorite to win ACC Player of the Year. They also return Armando Bacot to put next to him on the inside. The biggest thing for me, however, is they bring in the #3 recruiting class in the country led by Caleb Love, Walker Kessler, Day’Ron Sharpe, and RJ Davis. Some say this may be Roy Williams’ best class at UNC and I believe it as well. Now, onto my predictions for each of the Power 6 basketball conferences!
ACC: Duke POY: Garrison Brooks
Last year I picked UNC to win it all and as I’ve said, I was very wrong. Part of me wants to run it back and say UNC will win the ACC this year, but I can’t do it. I expect them to have a solid year, but they won’t win the conference. I hear the UVA chatter loud and clear as well, but something tells me they won’t win it either. They have one of the best coaches and system’s around when it comes to what Tony Bennett does. Because of this, they will always be at the top of the hill in college basketball. I like the addition of Sam Hauser. The issue rests with their offensive inconsistencies. Last season they were 234th in adjusted points per possession and there are 353 eligible teams on that list. That’s below ehh territory if you ask me. Enter my pick, the Duke Blue Devils. They lost Tre Jones, Cassius Stanley, and Vernon Carey to the draft. That will be a big blow, but Coach K recruits with the best of them and this year was no different. He brings in Jalen Johnson, Jeremy Roach, and D.J. Steward who I expect to fill in nicely. They also return last year’s five-star, Matthew Hurt to go with another returner in Wendell Moore. The Blue Devils will be well-coached and they will be able to score the ball. I think their infusion of returning talent + freshmen make them a tough out in the ACC. As far as the Player of the Year, the expert’s seem to agree with me on Garrison Brooks. I spoke highly of him earlier in the post and I’ll continue here. He will be the main guy for UNC this year with Cole Anthony gone. After being 5th in the ACC in both scoring and rebounding last season, I fully expect him to lead in at least one if not both of those when the season begins. Last season he was quietly one of the most productive bigs in the country. This season he won’t have to talk at all because we will all see him shine on the brightest stage.
BIG-12: Baylor POY: Jared Butler
The BIG-12 for years has been run by the Kansas Jayhawks. Since 2004, the Jayhawks have won at least a share of the conference 15 times including last season where they finished 28-3 with a 17-1 record in conference. Not this year! That is unless Mario Chalmers, the Morris twins, and Perry Ellis finds his 12th year of eligibility. Sorry Kansas fans, the team to beat resides in Waco, Texas. The Baylor Bears return 4 of their main guys this season. Jared Butler, MaCio Teague, Davion Mitchell, and Mark Vital. Butler is arguably the best scorer in the conference, maybe even nation. Vital is a menace on defense and Head Coach Scott Drew knows what he is doing. Kansas won’t go away easy. Neither will West Virginia. Texas Tech will be solid as always especially with the additions of Mac McClung, Marcus Santos-Silva and freshmen Nimari Burnett. Doubling back to my Player of the Year pick, Jared Butler was the top scorer, top 3-point shooter in terms of percentage and 3-pointers made per game in the conference. Don’t expect that to change either. Freshmen Cade Cunningham could give Butler a run for his money, but I expect the veteran to handle his business. Baylor sweeps the BIG-12!
Big East: Villanova POY: James Bouknight
The Big East is easy to forget about this season as unfortunate as it sounds. There was a time where Villanova, UConn, Xavier, Marquette were teams you heard about year in and year out. Guys like Myles Powell, Scottie Reynolds, Ryan Boatwright, and Kemba Walker were always in the Naismith conversation. Not this year. Those guys are long gone now, and those teams don’t have the feel they once did, at least to me. Villanova, however, is ranked to start the season at 3rd in the country. Much of this is due to veteran leadership from guys like Colin Gillespie, Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, and Justin Moore. I fully expect them to take the crown in the Big East this year with Creighton being their only real threat at the top. Speaking of Creighton, they have a guy by the name of Marcus Zegarowski. He can score it in bunches and CBS has him projected to win POY. Now, I’m not high on anything coming out of the Creighton corner; I haven’t exactly figured out why, but whenever I hear Creighton, I am extremely indifferent. Zegarowski is the real deal though and he will push my pick for the Player of the Year. But let me tell y’all about my pick! James Bouknight is a name you may be unfamiliar with, but it won’t be long before you know him. He is a tough, gritty guard out of Brooklyn who can score it at every level and jump out the gym. He could be the one to bring UCONN back to relevancy. Don’t believe me? Youtube is your best friend!
Big Ten: Illinois POY: Luka Garza
I know many of you were waiting to see what I did here. As a Michigan fan, it is hard to not be biased and say we will win it even if deep down I feel like we may. I’ll be professional though, and let it go for now. The BIG 10 is the best conference in basketball from top to bottom. You saw earlier just how many teams are sprinkled in the Top 25 so this conference race will be nothing short of a dog fight. Some like Iowa because they have the best player in the conference. Others like Wisconsin because in a year run by COVID-19, the Badgers have the most seniors so they don’t need time to gel. I like Illinois to come out and win it. It has been a while since Illinois was a popular name around the CBB world, but they have a guy by the name of Ayo Dosunma. Island work alert! If you are in front of him one on one, he is scoring and it is that simple. He is also one of the better defenders in the country. They also have Kofi Cockburn who is a beast inside. Don’t sleep on other teams like Michigan State, Indiana, or Michigan though. They all have pieces to make a run. Especially Michigan! We spoke earlier about Luka Garza. He is probably the best big in the country and definitely the best player in the Big Ten. He will put up big numbers this season and be THE reason Iowa makes noise, if they do in fact run the table this season.
PAC-12: UCLA POY: Remy Martin
So… I got the PAC-12 all wrong last year. I predicted Arizona to win the conference, didn’t happen. And I had a sleeper in Tres Tinkle projected to win Player of the Year, and that didn’t happen either. He did manage to make First-Team All Pac-12 though. This year I am going to get it right. UCLA will win the Pac-12 over the favorite, Oregon. Here is why: last season they were not supposed to be good, but by February they were coming together. They had won 7-straight games in February right before going into the tournament that got cancelled. Even better than that, they return all five starters and add Kentucky transfer, Johnny Juzang. Tyger Campbell will run the show for Mick Cronin’s team and I fully expect them to make some noice come March. It’s hard to go against Oregon and Dana Altman, but with the heart and soul, Payton Pritchard gone I think they struggle a bit this year even with some of the guys they bought in. Arizona State is a sneaky pick as well, though I don’t know how they are going to play all of the guards they have. Remy Martin, Alonzo Verge, Josh Christopher, Luther Muhammed, and Jaelen House will all look to carve out a role but there is only one ball. One guy will have a role, regardless and that is Remy Martin. He won Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year as a Freshmen and has been improving mightily ever since. Last year he posted 19.1 points, 4.1 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He is one of the more ruthless competitors in the Nation and will prove that by winning Player of the Year.
SEC: Kentucky POY: John Fulkerson
I’m going to say this now—I’ll never bet against Kentucky and Coach Cal to win the SEC. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter who is coming or going they will always find a way. He has done it time and time again. We are all so used to Kentucky losing early and John saying how bad they are, and then a month later they look like a new team. It’ll happen again, trust me. Tennessee looks very good on paper this year and there is no telling how they will perform. LSU looks to be good as well and so does Florida. Alabama also will be a big sleeper team as they get Jahvon Quinerly to run the point this season. All of that aside, BJ Boston, Devin Askew, Terrance Clarke, and Olivier Sarr will prove too much for teams in the SEC and the country. The team is young but aren’t they always? They have an abundance of talent and that is one thing that you want to start a team with. The rest will come. This isn’t John Calipari’s first trip around the block so if you think this team won’t be ready to win this conference you’re kidding yourself. I will show love to the Vols in one manner. John Fulkerson is my pick for Player of the Year. Grant Williams won in a similar position a few years back and I think it is Fulkerson’s time to shine in Knoxville. They have a ton of other young talent around him that will get a lot of media praise, but Fulkerson will be the steady hand they rely on night in and night out.
